Congratulation Kendall Barnes

The winner of the Nook Tablet was  Mr Kendall Barnes.  Mr Barnes was in town and decided to stop by the Collinsville Library with a friend who was getting a library card.  Intuition served him well when he decided to buy a chance on our Nook Tablet.

The tickets were shuffled and a third party (non library employee) drew the winner.  Mr Barnes was excited and said he felt blessed.

The chances on the Nook Tablet  has been on sale since September 2012, and the proceeds go to the building fund at the Collinsville Library

White Plains 4-5 at Collinsville 8-1

White Plains 4-5

at

Collinsville 8-1

Thursday 7 p.m.

Chad Hawkins Stadium

First meeting between the two teams

Injuries: Jacob Ponder (back) day to day

Notes: Collinsville went in pads monday. This is a short week but it allows an extra day for the first round of the playoffs...Collinsville has outscored opponents 358-181...The Panthers were ranked 9th in last week's polls...Collinsville will open the playoffs by hosting RA Hubbard, 6-3, in the first round...DeShawn Moore and Edgar Padilla both had 100+ yards receiving last week...The win against Valley Head marked only the second time the Panthers had defeated Valley Head 5 straight times. Collinsville now leads the series 33-30-4...The Panthers have now won 31 of the last 36 games.

Quoting Coach Beckett

On White Plains

"It will be a tremendous challenge for our football team. White Plains does what good old fashion football teams do and thats run the football. They run the ball 95% of the time. I probably would too if I had a 315 and 285 pound tackles. The are extremely physical."

"They run a offense that you rarely see so it makes it difficult to stop. Heath Harmon and his staff do a great job. He's been apart of state championship staffs and had success at several schools."

On Senior Night

"We have a special group of seniors. One of my favorite groups ever. They come to work every day with a passion. They band together and are very tight knit. They never get in trouble, suspended extra. That's a tribute to how good they are as kids and how they've bought into what was asked of them."

On the Valley Head game

"We really had a average first half. Valley Head had a lot to do with that. They really took the game to us. Our body language was terrible and Valley Head fed off of that. After the game, I was asked what I said to the team at halftime. Many of our players are NBA fans. So I asked them, 'If LeBron James or Kobe Bryant were down 4 points at half, would they put their head down and have terrible body language or would they clap their hands and embrace the challenge. The second half, I thought we embraced the challenge and fought back."

On CJ, DeShawn and Edgar

"CJ Jones made some really good decisions throwing. DeShawn and Edgar both had 100+ yards catching and made big plays. They are all competitors in the highest since."

The Panthers willl go to the playoffs for the third straight time...Next week's game against Donoho will be on a thursday...Collinsville has now won 30 of their last 35 games.

Quoting Coach Beckett

on Valley Head

"They certainly showed improvement this season. Seamingly gotten better every game. That's a sign of a hungry well-coached team. I'm very impressed by inside linebacker Trever Manley and quarterback Benjamin Kirby. The offensive line is very physical and gets better each week. Omar Boyzo, Jacob Hodges, Adam Miller and Christian Muir are all very good. Dallas and Joshua Gregory are very good running the ball."

"This is a county and region rivalry. So, I'm sure Valley Head will bring their 'A-Game'."

on Collinsville's keys to the game

"We will have to play well up front. Our offensive line has worked very hard late and has graded out well. We have to do a good job of keeping Valley Head's offense off the field."

on last week's 42-6 win over Gaylesville

"I thought we played a very well. Coach Edwards had a good plan and we stopped a good back. We were able to set a good pace offensively that seemed to keep them off-balenced. Our effort was at a really good level."

Injuries: Michael Glenn (shoulder) out for the season, Cody Baine (ankle) day to day.

Notes: Due to the region redrawing, Collinsville will travel to Gaylesville for the second consecutive season...Collinsville has outscored opponents 237-142 and is averaging 33.8 points per game...Collinsville entered last week's game ranked 10th...Last week's performance put CJ over the 1,000 yard mark passing...Collinsville won last week's game with Daniel Bradford at half speed. He led the Trojans to a 12-8 record. Head Coach Alan Beckett was head baseball coach at Gaylesville from 1994-1995. The team made two trips to the playoffs including a trip to the quarterfinals. The deepest Gaylesville has ever gone in the baseball playoffs...The football team, volleyball team and cheerleaders were honored at the Collinsville First Methodist Church over the weekend...Last weekends homecoming crowd was one of the largest in recent years for the Panthers. Both stands, fences and the hill were virtually full.

Quoting Coach Beckett:

On the Spring Garden game

"To me, that was one of the most exciting games since I have been Collinsville. The game featured lots of offense and lots of big plays."

On composure

"I was proud that our players stayed self-disciplined. There were times we could have panicked. There were times that the game got testy and we could have lost our head. We handled adversity well."

On the last drive

"It started with a good kickoff return to 40+ yardline. We thought they might back off. So the first play we hit them with a screen underneath and got a first down. The next play they showed full man and we were able to get behind them. Justin was wide open and CJ did a good job of laying it up to him. We had a penalty back us up to the six-yard-line. We sent Edgar in motion and he made a big catch."

On Gaylesville

"Coach Clowdis, Coach Garmen and Coach Glenn Honeycutt do a great job. Coach Honeycutt joined there staff this year after retiring in Georgia. He brings a lot to the table. He has head coached Pepperill to state championships, played on the Georgia 1980 National Championship and will be in the Georgia High School Hall of Fame."

"Quarterback Cole Murphy and tailback John David Jennings are really good. Just like Spring Garden, Gaylesville pulls no punches, they come right at you with the running game. So it will be a challenge for us to stop the run."

Notes: Collinsville will celebrate homecoming...The traditional homecoming pep rally/bonfire will be thursday night at 6 p.m...Spring Garden comes into the game ranked...Collinsville Junior High closed the season with a 2-0 loss to Plainview.

Quoting Coach Beckett:

On the Cedar Bluff game

"Kudos to Cedar Bluff for a great game plan and great effort. They were very physical and took our running game away. I was dissapointed that we didn't tackle better, dropped some passes, didn't get a better rush, and didn't get a better push (blocking) up front."

"We did get some big plays passing and slowed their passing game down. Some of our kids played through some gutty injuries."

On Spring Garden

"They come in with the best start in school history. Spring Garden has a new bounce in their step with Coach Jason Howard. First off it jumps out at me how good they are up front. Spring Garden has a very physical and disciplined offensive line. They are relentless with their blocks. Obviously, they have one of the best running backs in 1A with Forrest Livingston. He will be a task to slow down."

On Injuries

"We came out of last week banged up. We have to do a good job of rehabing all week and get better. At one time it looked really bad. We've come closer to getting the guys ready to play."

On Mindset

"We knew this would be a tough game to get ready for either way. We knew coming out of Cedar Bluff would be tough to turn around and get up emotionally again. We really emphasized the caliber of team coming in immediately after last week's game. In advance we set up several speakers for the week. However, we still had one of the worst practices of the season monday. Tuesday was much better. It will be a challenge."

Collinsville-Donoho Preview

Donoho (4-0)

at

Collinsville (4-0)

Friday at Chad Hawkins Stadium, 7 pm

Injuries: Kevin McElrath (concussion) will not play, Cody Baine (ankle) will not play.

Collinsville Record Breakdown:

Home: 1-0 Away: 2-0 Nuetral: 1-0 Region: 3-0 Non-region: 1-0 vs. Donoho All-Time: 3-2

Notes: Collinsville players had a huge thrill playing on the newly refurvished Paul Snow Stadium at Jacksonville Stadium... Collinsville quarterback C.J. Jones completed 7 of 8 passes for 244 yards and three touchdowns in a 49-14 victory over Sumiton Christian. His scoring passes covered 49, 38 and 25 yards. CJ, also, had a interception...Edgar Padilla, also received an honorable mention nod after catching three passes for 102 yards, including a 38-yard TD, and running 36 yards for a score...Collinsville averages 44 points per game...All 41 players have played in all four games this season for Collinsville...Collinsville is ranked 8th in this week's poll...Both Collinsville and Donoho went 11-2 last season and are 4-0 this season...Collinsville won 27 of it's last 31 games dating back to 2009.

Quoting Coach Beckett:

On playing at JSU

"It was a all-time thrill for the players to get to dress in their locker room and play on that turf. JSU has a really nice stadium after the new additions. I thought we played on a high level, in part, because of the surroundings."

On Donoho

"They have won 13 of their last 15. They went to the quarterfinals last year. They know how to win."

QB

"Donoho has scored 30 or more in each game this season. The offense starts with quarterback Marshall Ghee. He has a strong arm and is very good. He went to the Manning Quarterback Camp for top-notch quarterbacks."

Skill

"Running back Justin Foster is very good and Chris Carr is a big play receiver."

Coach Felder

"Coach Felder is as fine a coach as there is in 1A. He and his staff work year-round. It shows in the success they have year-in and year-out."

Trap Game

"This week presents a trap game for us. Last week was a very fun experience for our players. We played very well and we worked very hard last week. Now, you have to be very mature and go back to work for a very good team. Add to that, the temptation, by some, to look ahead to Cedar Bluff. That would be a grave mistake. Sometimes as a coach, you have to be a bad guy to them to maintain focus."

Collinsville vs. Sumiton Christian

at Jacksonville State University

Paul Snow Stadium/Bill Burgess Field

Friday September 21 at 7 p.m.

vs. Sumiton Christian: 1-1 all-time

Injuries - Cody Baine (ankle-out)

Notes: The junior high and b-team got rained out this week and did not play...This will the Panthers first game at Jacksonville State University...With the starting defense still in the game, Collinsville has not given up any points. Quoting Coach Beckett:

On the Woodville game

"The good thing is that we played lots of people. The bad thing is the varsity didn't play long. It was out of hand too quick. With less than 15 offensive plays, we were in the 40's. No need to get anyone hurt."

On Sumiton Christian

"They are coming down from 2A and will be very good. DeMonte Hobbs and Austin Clark are very good football players. Nobody has slowed the two down yet. It will be very tough."

"Defensively they give you lots of pressure with stunts. They play lots of people so fatigue isn't a issue. Coach Blevins does a very good job."

On playing at Jacksonville State

"Our kids are euphoric to get to play at JSU. I've negotiated at several different venues the last couple years. We finally found the right fit. It is something the players will always remember. Paul Snow Stadium is really nice after they refurbished it."

"This venue is a great way to sale our program to younger players. Sometimes other's don't realize how today's players are very motivated by facilities."

The B-team won 28-0...Panther Coach Colby Helms became the proud father of a little boy named Braxton last friday...Collinsville has now won 25 of the last 29 games dating back to the last three games of the 2009 season.

Quoting Coach Beckett:

On Jacksonville Christian

"We were able to work on several things. We really preached hard to get better each play. To stress us and make it a faceless opponent. Like last week, we were able to start lots of players and get lots of people snaps."

"Our linemen played well, linebackers played well and we threw it well."

On Woodville

"They run the wing-t. You have to be assignment oriented and take the various partner plays away. We are going to try and use this as another opportunity to get better."

Nick Brandon and Jess Walls led with a cockroach.

Brett Bowen led with 2 hurries.

Justin Little led with 5 tackles.

Quoting Coach Beckett:

On last week's game:

"We got to start 18 players. We've never been able to do that. Lots of guys got playing time (over 40) and we came out injury free. It was good to see CJ have a good night. With the exception of two reads, he had a good night. The ball was spread around to 11 players on offense and our linebackers got much need snaps."

On the game being close early

"We are like a boxer who will go 15 rounds. We are not as proned to knock someone out in the first round with big plays. We will try to wear opponents down over the course of the game.."

On Jacksonville Christian Coach Tommy Miller:

"Dr. Tommy Miller does a great job as head coach. It is hard to respect someone more than Dr. Miller. He serves as principal and coach. His teams are sound in what they do. He gets the most from his players."

On Jacksonville Christian:

"Tailback Dakota Crook (#1) runs the football hard and quarterback Daylon Brackett (#22)makes them go."

"JCA is coming off a big win over Woodville and will have a big crowd."

"They run a multiple defense and pro "I" offensively. JCA won't beat themselves and force you to beat them."

Collinsville Staff:

"When I came there we had two coaches. Now we have a big group. Coach Edwards does a great job with the defense. Teddy Helms and my dad are invaluable because they've been there. Cole Owens, Lee Orr and Chuck Dutton do a great job teaching technique and Mike McElrath keeps the guys going. Donny Stevens has been a jack of all trade that has helped us in so many ways. He's really jumped in. Jeff Stanley has been a great motivator and team player. I'm VERY picky about who comes in but these guys have accepted the roles I've given them and bought in."

Returners in BOLD

Quoting Coach Beckett:

On the Spring

"We've had several winning days. We've taken several days to evaluate players and try to pair them up with the best positions for the team. We've taken a couple more days to learn terminology. Then we will take a day or two to prepare for the spring game."

New Faces

"We have several new guys playing. They are, for the most part, lost as a goose. However, we encourage them to stay with it and things will get better. The return of Daniel Bradford could really help the team."

Replacing Lost Players

"We have several players who will be very tough to replace. It was a very good senior class that won lots of games. We feel great about CJ Jones (at quarterback). He's a different quarterback than Nathan but brings a lot to the table."

Goals of the Spring

"Find linebackers is at the top of our list. We lost several good ones. We, also, need to find overall depth."

Spring Game

"Last year we new our identity. This year we have an idea but we want to find out for sure. We want to find out who can help so we have several guys who need to cut their teeth irreguardless of the outcome."

Fyffe

"Playing someone like Fyffe makes your team better. They are the best of the best. When I first got to Collinsville, I wanted to show the team what type practices we wanted. So we loaded the team up and went to a Fyffe practice. I thought it helped our players to see that tough mindset."

"They'll have another good team. Their kids are so tough and their staff is second to none. The way they run the jet-series is straight out of a clinic."

Crossville

"It is good for the two to play. Before Crossville was a 4A, it was a big rivalry. Now, the two schools have a big student-population difference."

Nathan Coker Commits to Play Football at Birmingham Southern

Nathan Coker has commits to Southern

After a prestigious high school career, Nathan Coker has decided to go Birmingham Southern and play college football.

Nathan plans to pursue pre-med. Coaches want to look at him as either a slot receiver or cornerback.

Nathan had a banner senior season. He was named First-Team All-State, Times-Journal Offensive Player of the Year, Gadsden Times All-Area Offensive Player of the Year, and Region MVP.

Nathan played quarterback and cornerback and went 77-128 passing for 1,480 yards and 16 TD's. Rushed 84 times for 549 yards. Defensively 3 interceptions, 26 tackles as a shut-down corner.

Nathan was named Region Offensive MVP his Junior year as well. Nathan made All-County and Times-Journal All-County his junior season.

Nathan missed his sophmore season due to a car wreck suffered the night of the fall jamboree. However, his freshmen season he led the team with six interceptions.

Nathan was a two-year starter in basketball and baseball. During his sophmore season he played soccer after the baseball team had finsihed and was a impact player.

All the time maintaining a solid GPA and ACT score.

Quoting Coach Beckett

"What jumps out at me first is that he is so popular with the student body. He blends in with every segment of our student population. He is very polite and does a great job with his grades. Nathan is very ambitious and does well at every thing he encounters."

Shorter signs Collinsville Star Player Curtis Williams

A Signing Party was held Wednesday, February 1st at 9:30 a.m. in the field house of the Collinsville Panthers for Curtis Williams. Curtis will continue his football career at Shorter. His mother, Brenda Williams was on hand for this event. Several reporters were there and asked Curtis about his last season as a panther. Curtis said the players really came together as a team and didn’t let anything come between them-on the field or off.

Curtis Williams had a stellar senior season in which he had 32 tackles, 6 assist, 1 caused fumble, 1 recovered fumble, 7 interceptions, 3 returned for a touchdown, offensively 17 catches 482 yards and 8 TD's. Curtis was named first team 1A All-State, All-Region, All-County and Times-Journal All-County.

Collinsville Head Football Coach Alan Beckett said, "Curtis has had a great four years. His senior season was something to remember. This is a reflection of his and his teammate’s hard work."

Girls just want to be Champs

Our community is so proud of our Collinsville Girls Basketball team.  History was made by the team when the Lady Panthers downed No. 6 Geraldine 60-44 in the varsity girls championship game at the Dekalb County high school basketball tournament.  Attaining that goal gave them home field advantage in the area tournament  where they wrapped up another championship on January 24, 2012.
